Celebrating age - A new festival for Telford

Organisers of a new Telford festival are inviting everyone to love later life.

The Celebrating Age Festival will take place from 2-6 October and will launch the day after the UN International Day of Older Persons on 1 October.

An exciting programme of over 70 events will take place during the week-long festival. Launching on Monday 2nd October with a special showcase exhibition at The Place, Oakengates, people can come along and sample a range of activities throughout the day – many of which are free. They can also discover how they can get more involved in activities in their communities.

Lynne Carney, Project Officer for the Senior Citizens Forum, said: “We like to encourage people to do more, not less as they age. There is so much being done in Telford by older people and this deserves to be celebrated and showcased.”

Heather Osborne, Chief Executive of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin said: “We will be highlighting all the activities, arts and crafts older people take part in. We know how important being active and staying engaged is to wellbeing and this is an opportunity to truly celebrate age and find something new to inspire you.“

Sue Hughes, Events Coordinator for The Wrekin Housing Trust, said: “We are delighted to be involved in the festival. There will be something for everyone to try. It’s a great way of encouraging older people to get out and about, meet people and have fun.”

Local groups, clubs and voluntary organisations will be opening their doors and celebrating the achievements and interests of older people, holding taster workshops and special events specifically focussed on older people’s participation. Events include singing for the brain, hosted by the Alzheimer’s Society, Men’s Shed will be offering a woodwork activity and a clay workshop will take place at Coalport China Museum.

It is the first of what is hoped will become an annual event and is being organised in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Senior Citizens Forum, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin and The Wrekin Housing Trust and supported by Telford & Wrekin Council.

Events and workshops are taking place at venues across Telford and Wrekin, for further information and a programme of events call Lynne Carney on 07552 975676 or visit: www.celebratingagetelford.uk
