A brush with fame for New College Telford art lecturer

A brush with fame for New College Telford art lecturer

| by Editor | Posted in Telford News

New College Telford fine art lecturer Lucia Cunningham is to have her work exhibited at one of Shropshire’s most famous buildings later this month.

Lucia, known as ‘Luby’, will be staging a pop-up exhibition at the Flaxmill in Shrewsbury from August 18-20.

It will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm on each day, and there will also be a preview from 5pm-8pm on the Saturday, where visitors can meet the artist and chat about her work, over a glass of wine

The event is being supported by Historic England, the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings, plus New College Telford, and Telford College of Arts and Technology.

Lucia said: “My paintings are a journey through landscapes and memory. They are inspired by places and things and expressed on extremely different layers.

“When I was eight years old I lived in New York state. This was when I first went to the MOMA in New York city and saw Pollock and Rothko paintings which blew me away.

“Even though I did not know anything about the paintings I had an intuitive understanding and knew then I wanted to be a painter, I still feel the same way.”

Lucia, who studied at Shrewsbury Art School, has been nominated for the Original Turner Prize for British Landscape Painters, and has exhibited and sold her work around the world.

She also featured on the ITV series ‘A Brush With Fame’ where she was filmed breaking the boundaries in portrait painting on national television.

She said: “I have had work commissioned by television personalities and private companies in the UK, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, Australia, Poland and New York.

“I have also been designing, managing and delivering community art projects for local authorities, galleries/museums, charities and private organisations.”

Lucia also runs children's art workshops at cultural diversity events and interfaith celebrations in Shrewsbury during the summer months.
