Conquering the Fear of Public Speaking

Conquering the Fear of Public Speaking

| by Editor | Posted in Telford Wellbeing

Telford Daily PRSS editor, Simon, has recently been hypnotised to help with his fear of public speaking. Here’s how he got on…

A few weeks ago, I was asked to be the guest speaker at the June meeting of Telford Business Club. I don’t mind admitting that the thought of speaking in front of a group of people I’d never met, left me absolutely petrified!

I have always suffered with a fear of public speaking, the very thought of it leaves me feeling sick to my stomach, unable to eat and unable to sleep well the night before. I will usually come up with an excuse not to do it and I’ve even been known to fake an illness to get out of it.

As it happened, on the very day I was asked to be the guest speaker, I was due to meet with Tracy Swift, a hypnotherapist I had met a few weeks earlier at a Shropshire Chamber networking event. When I mentioned the invitation and my reservations to Tracy, she said she was sure she would be able to help me overcome my fear and anxiety about public speaking.

Tracy Swift Hypnotherapist

So, on Saturday 10th June, I arrived for a session at Tracy’s office in Newport. I spent about an hour and a half with Tracy, during which time she spoke to parts of my unconscious brain through hypnosis and replaced the fear and anxiety with positive feelings and confidence.

I left Tracy’s office feeling refreshed with and with a newfound sense of confidence about doing the talk – I was even strangely looking forward to the event! Later that evening Tracy emailed me a recording she had put together from notes she had made during our session to help reinforce the work she had done. She mentioned that I should listen to it at least once a day until the day of the talk.

Before I knew it, it was Tuesday evening and time for the event. I arrived at the venue in plenty of time and was actually feeling relaxed about the whole thing. The meeting started and before I knew it the Chairperson was introducing me to the 15 or so members, along with Tracy who had attended to give me some moral support. I had 15 minutes to fill with the story of my journey through work and business that led me to the point of launching Telford Daily PRSS in April of this year. Practice runs had gone well, but the longest it had taken was 7 minutes 30 seconds, so there was definitely some padding out to be done, plus questions from the floor.

I remained seated for the talk as the meeting was more informal than I had anticipated – definitely a good thing! I started to talk and everyone sat and listened, laughed in the right places and before I knew it I was finished and the clock said 15 minutes! The audience seemed to enjoy it and a few questions were asked. Everybody said how well I delivered it.

I would like to thank Tracy for her help I honestly believe I would not have been able to do this without her help. This experience is a real testament to what you can achieve with the right help from the right people at the right time.

Tracy offers a wide range of hypnotherapy services from helping with weight loss, stress reduction and quit smoking programmes.
