Shropshire residents called to unite against dementia this Dementia Awareness Week

A week packed with ways to seek information from dementia professionals will mark this year’s Dementia Awareness Week (14-20 May).

Alzheimer’s Society staff and volunteers will be out and about across Shropshire to encourage residents to unite against dementia. Information stands will be popping up across the county during the week, where people can put their questions to the experts. Trained staff will be on hand to provide information and advice to anyone worried about or affected by dementia.

In addition, there will be the opportunity at some of the events for the public to take part in a Dementia Friends Information Session. Here people can learn a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turn that understanding into action. Unite with us now on:

14/5/17, Market Drayton Cattle Market, Adderley Road, Market Drayton, TF9 3SW, 10.30am.

Tern Valley Vintage Ploughing Club are holding their annual rally and inviting everyone to unite with them and help raise funds for Alzheimer's Society.

20/5/17,10.30 - 13.00pm, St Andrews Church Hall, 7 Wallshead Way, Church Aston, Newport, TF10 9JG

Vintage tea and cake hosted by Alzheimer's Society and supported by Dementia Friendly churches, interactive reminiscence activities welcoming people with dementia and their families together and local activity groups to support people with dementia to continue to live well in their community.

Encompassing Library sessions, music, local history, vintage hair and dress up activity for all the family and much more. Our local DAA will be on hand to talk about becoming dementia friendly. The event is one of three that will run throughout the day.  The event continues as we unite on our journey to the next event, either by bus or walking with a group to Muxton.

20/5/17, 2pm - 4.30pm, St John's Church, Saltwells Dr, Muxton, Telford TF2 8RJ.

Dementia Friendly Film Showing of Singing in the Rain. Welcoming people with dementia and their families to experience the main event as well as opportunities for vintage games and local history reminiscence activities. This is the Third part of our United Against Dementia Day which starts in Church Aston and finishes in Muxton.

This year, Alzheimer’s Society is asking people to come together to unite against dementia, forgetting their differences to help urgently find a cure, improve care, and offer help and understanding during Dementia Awareness Week.

Dianne Beaumont, Services Manager for Alzheimer’s Society in Shropshire said:

“We’re calling on people across Shropshire to show their support at any of our events this Dementia Awareness Week.

“Dementia doesn’t care who you are; it could affect us all. It’s set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes, and so many people are facing it alone. We hope these events will help give people a better understanding of the support available to them.

“People with dementia often feel – and are – misunderstood, marginalised and isolated but with the right support and understanding they can continue to live fulfilling lives and make a contribution to their communities.”

Alzheimer’s Society is here for anyone affected by dementia. The charity provides information and support, to find out more call the National Dementia Helpline on 0300 222 1122 or visitalzheimers.org.uk/DAW
